Our team saw this as an opportunity to use these giant boulders to further tell the story of the park. The shut-ins boast natural waterslides, a unique feature, and you can even find smaller pools to kick back and relax in away from the crowds. ![]() Though the flood was tragic in many ways, it did reveal 1.4 billion-year-old bedrock, birthed when volcanoes created the St. Signature Design created an interpretive program that included 10 storylines presented using more than 65 exterior interpretive markers and panels, as well as podcasts, storytelling stations, and 2,500 square feet of interior exhibits. Signature Design’s task was to interpret the park’s rich geological history and natural habitat, as well as its unique shut-in formations, made where streams have carved through the mountains to create a series of pools amidst huge boulders. The engineering and design team was hired to clean up the devastation and then develop a master plan to restore facilities, which included trails and pavilions, an amphitheater and visitor center, a riverfront boardwalk, an outdoor classroom and play area, and picnic areas for large and small groups. Come and enjoy Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park.Ninety percent of facilities at the 8,500-acre Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park were destroyed by flooding when a reservoir levy broke and 1.3 billion gallons of water crashed down the mountains and through the park. Activities abound for any outdoor enthusiast. We camped at Johnsons Shut-Ins State Park in a Motorhome. Great swimming in the summer in the pools of the fall. The Shut Ins refers to the way the river is flat then carves over a series of rocky falls. The park is now fully functional including extensive trails, some paved and others rugged. The CG is about a mile from the State Park and an easy bike ride. In 2009 the river and shut-ins were reopened for recreation in the water. The park partly reopened in the summer of 2006 for limited day use, but due to dangerous conditions, swimming in the river and exploring the rock formations was prohibited. The park was closed because of the extent of the damage it received. Part of the damage was the eradication of the park’s campground, but being a weeknight in December, the campground was unoccupied the only people at the park were the park’s superintendent and his family the family survived, sustaining some injuries. On Decemthe park was devastated by a catastrophic flood caused by the failure of the Taum Sauk pump storage plant reservoir atop a neighboring mountain. Louis civic leader and conservationist from the prominent Desloge lead Mining family, which has continued over the years to donate funds for park improvements. Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park offers camping, a newly constructed visitor center, as well as trails and scenic views. Most of the park, including the shut-ins and two miles of river frontage, was assembled over the course of 17 years and donated to the state in 1955 by Joseph Desloge (1889–1971), a St. (13 miles from Elephant Rocks on Hwy N, 15 miles from Pilot Knob) Johnson’s Shut Ins is a jewel of the system, a place with something for everyone: pretty picnic areas, Ozark landscapes, natural places to swim, great campsites. The park is also Missouri’s most botanically diverse state park. The swift waters of the Black River flow through a canyon like volcanic gorge, called a “shut-in” creating a beautiful photographic and swimming opportunity.
